A few hours ago we launched a campaign to stop the English Defence League and other assorted hooligans and fascists marching through Luton on 19 September. We believe that there is a serious risk of racist violence and disorder if the anti-Islam protest is allowed to happen.
Almost 8,000 people have sent off emails supporting the ban to the Home Secretary and the Chief Constable of Bedfordshire Police.
This is really tremendous and demonstrates the strength of feeling against those agitating hate. Our target is 10,000, which I hope we will reach before the end of the day.
I shall shortly be contacting the Home Office and Bedfordshire Police with a formal request that they ban the hooligans and fascists from Luton. I have prepared a briefing outlining our arguments, including detailed profile of the individuals and groups behind the anti-Islam campaign.
If you want to add your name to the campaign, please visit this page:
ps, as I have finished writing this blog we have passed through the 8,000 barrier. Thanks to everyone who has sent emails.
