Liverpool to Leeds

Travelling over the Pennines from Liverpool to Leeds was one of the most splendid two hours and a bit of my life. I'm not sure for the average passenger that it would take as long as it did on the Daily Mirror bus, but for scenery and sheer beauty it is a trip that matches, or even surpasses, the many trips I have made across Australia, America or Aldershot.

Sadly, it rained hard and heavy. Neither Gregg nor I could use our cameras to capture the beauty of it. The team were happy though; we'd just had an excellent visit to the set of the soap opera Hollyoaks. Age may have kicked in, because both Gregg and I were certain we were on the set of Brookside, which for our younger readers was at the time (1982-1997) a magnificently controversial soap opera that involved some of what would eventually become Britain's finest actors and actresses.

Not only were this new breed of actors good, they were aggressively pushing their credentials as progressives. Kevin Sacre, Anthony Quinlan and Jessica Fox stood in the rain and told us how much they supported "an excellent initiative". Kevin Sucre told us, "I support this campaign because we have to defeat racism and fascism.

"My wife is not English and if the BNP were elected I'd be lost."

She's a lucky woman. Like a lot of other people. Kevin really cares.

Bus tour launch, Manchester

Our new driver Steve. Already had his first curry....

Our new driver Steve. Already had his first curry....

Well, we had a little launch in Manchester last night. Some old and familiar faces were there as well as our new driver, Steve.

Our long suffering other driver Kev has opted to drive around Spain in a London bus this year instead of having to endure the endless amount of curries and meat pies that driving the HnH bus entails. In his honour, we had a curry.

This year's bus is a 1958 Bristol Lodekka which is capable of up to a stunning 43 miles per hour. So, we should be cruising at a magnificent rate as we head for Liverpool today.

This afternoon we're catching up with the cast of C4 soap opera Hollyoaks. On the way there I plan to wrestle with the technology that is my new ipod. So far I have managed to upload/download on to it one album. So be very aware Paul Heaton, I'll know all the words by the time you take to the stage in my local later this month!

Another year, another red bus

posted by: Matthew Collins | on: Thursday, 8 April 2010, 00:10

Another year, another red bus. The Daily Mirror/Thompsons Solicitors HOPE not hate bus will be travelling excruciatingly slowly while delivering our anti-BNP message of hope.

Starting in Manchester, I'm going to be responsible for daily updates on how the tour is going. Along the way through Leeds and Stoke we'll be enthusing and encouraging people to challenge racism and to fight fascism.

As is tradition, I'll also be reporting on the number of curries and meat pies consumed along the way.
