WHY THIS ROLE IS IMPORTANT – AND WHY YOU’LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

HOPE not hate is the UK’s leading anti-fascist organisation. Our mission is simple – to monitor and challenge the far right, to engage in the communities that are susceptible to them and to address the issues and policies which give rise to them.

We exist to expose and oppose the far-right, whether that’s at the ballot box, in communities or online. In recent years, the far-right has grown in confidence and influence, and we are growing our team to meet this rising threat.

We are seeking a Head of Persuasion to drive fast-moving communications work that challenges far-right narratives, counters misinformation, exposes far-right influencers and ensures our voices and arguments cut through in moments of political noise.

This role requires someone with brilliant political and editorial instincts: someone who understands which stories and narratives will resonate with key audiences, how to respond quickly to emerging issues, and how to take opportunities as they arise to shape public debate.

What you’ll do in the role

You’ll lead our responsive communications work aimed at exposing and opposing the far-right, ensuring HOPE not hate can respond quickly and effectively to breaking news, political moments and emerging narratives.

You’ll identify opportunities to intervene in public debate and reach target audiences with messages that undermine the appeal of the far-right. You’ll develop communications approaches that speak to the issues and concerns that can drive support for the far-right, helping to shift perceptions and challenge narratives.

You’ll develop and execute communications strategies across new and legacy media platforms, prioritising the outlets, titles, journalists, influencers and digital spaces with the highest reach and trust among key audiences. You’ll use a mix of earned media, targeted digital marketing, influencer engagement and traditional communications approaches to ensure messages reach the people most likely to be impacted by or exposed to far-right narratives.

You’ll help bridge the gap between online and offline conversations — identifying narratives emerging in digital spaces and bringing them into wider public debate, while also ensuring mainstream political and media moments are understood and engaged with online.

You’ll build trusted relationships with journalists, media outlets, influencers and partners across the non-profit ecosystem, progressive movements and political media to expand our reach and strengthen our ability to respond quickly when opportunities emerge.

Working closely with our Content Officer and colleagues across HOPE not hate, you’ll generate creative ideas, commission and shape content, and ensure rapid rebuttal activity connects seamlessly with our wider organisational strategy.

What we think you’ll need to be able to do the job

  • You’ll be driven by putting together the puzzle pieces of the right story, the right audience and the right route to market to land counter populist messages effectively.
  • You’ll have the ability to spot opportunities and act quickly — understanding when a breaking story, political moment or emerging narrative presents an opportunity to influence public debate, and turning ideas into impactful communications at pace.
  • You’ll have experience coordinating rapid communications in fast-moving environments. This could be as a journalist or editor, or working in political environments such as an MP, Mayor or Minister’s office, campaigning organisations or similar settings.
  • You’ll have strong political instinct and judgement, understanding how to weigh up competing priorities and identify the moments where HOPE not hate can make the greatest impact.
  • You’ll have experience building and maintaining trusted relationships with journalists, media organisations, influencers or other external stakeholders, with a track record of using those relationships to achieve communications outcomes.
  • You’ll enjoy working collaboratively across teams and with partner organisations, using your influence and judgement to make things happen beyond your direct sphere of responsibility.
  • You’ll be creative and able to generate ideas that help messages cut through with target audiences, working alongside colleagues to develop content that resonates.
  • You’ll have a deep respect for communities susceptible to far-right narratives and be curious about the social, political and economic contexts that give rise to far-right support.

We are looking for someone with the emotional resilience to work in a field that involves challenging content, strong political awareness and judgement, and the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.

Working environment

You’ll have the opportunity to work across HOPE not hate’s communications, campaigns and research teams, supported by colleagues with expertise across content, campaigning, digital communications and research. The role will involve using a range of communications tools and channels, including earned media, digital platforms and targeted outreach, to maximise impact.

Diversity and inclusion

We believe that our work will be at its best if it is created by people with a range of backgrounds and experiences. We are keen to interview people who will add diversity to our team. We are an antifascist organisation, which strives to be an effective ally in the wider fight against racism and inequity.

How to apply for this role

Answer the following questions (max 2,000 characters each):

  1. Briefly describe your work over the last five years, including roles, organisations, and responsibilities (include voluntary work if applicable).
  2. Explain why you’re interested in the role.
  3. Share an example of a communications project you have led on which has moved the dial with a target audience.
