●Welsh Campaigns Organiser

Salary: £33,000 to 35,000

Reports to: Campaigns and Organising Lead

At the ballot box, on the streets and online, Britain’s far right is posing its most serious threat since the Second World War.

HOPE not hate are looking to hire Local Campaign Organisers to join our team as we embark on a new project aimed at building hopeful communities in areas susceptible to the far right.

What you’ll do in the role

  • Working in local communities to build local resistance to the far right. 
  • Working with communities to identify key local issues that may form campaigns, in the run up to local elections.  
  • Building capacity by mobilising and organising key HOPE not hate supporters. 
  • Providing support to the wider C&C team including identifying potential ‘campaign heroes’ across the country from these events who we can work with to create short films and social media posts to celebrate hope
  • Organising hopeful community events in your patch and developing relationships with key community groups and leaders. 
  • Capacity committing, you will work with wider C&C team on our national campaigning agenda including our campaigns to strengthen regulation on social media companies and to provide racial, social and economic justice for communities across the UK.

The type of person we are looking for

  • Someone with a deep respect for local communities who are susceptible to the far right. Our role as HOPE not hate is to work proactively with these communities, without judgement and with great sensitivity. 
  •  Experience in a political or community organising role with excellent political judgement.  
  • Experience mobilising and managing volunteers. 
  • Someone who can demonstrate emotional resilience when working on a tough issue in a high pressure climate. We understand that our work can be stressful and have support in place for all team members who need it but we encourage applicants to think carefully about whether they are prepared to work on this subject area day in day out.
  • Someone with a clean driving licence and access to their own vehicle (we will cover your fuel expenses!)
  • Someone who is proactive, suggesting new ideas and approaches to make our work as successful as it can be.

About the team:

This role sits in the Campaigns and Communications Department of HOPE not hate working alongside our C&C Director, our Communications Team ( Digital Lead, Press and Communications Officer, Content Officer) and our Campaigns Team (Campaigns and Organising Lead, Campaigns and Mobilisation Officer, Yorkshire Organiser). You will be part of a small organising team making an impact in building resistance to the far right across the UK

HOPE not hate is seeking a Parliamentary Officer to work with political stakeholders to build appetite for real and lasting change for communities across the UK and to safeguard against far-right extremism online.

What you’ll do in the role

  • Work with our Campaigns and Communications Director to implement the organisation’s political strategy.
  • Lead our Parliamentary work mitigating the spread of online extremism – this includes regular engagement with MPs, select committees and leading on Parliamentary bills relevant to the mission of the organisation.
  • Work with the research, policy and communities teams to build public affairs plans for the release of reports, research and investigations.
  • Support the campaigns team with projects

What we think you’ll need to be able to do the job:

  • An understanding of how parliament works and how to influence Ministers, MPs and peers. You might have worked as a parliamentary assistant within an MPs office or ran a successful campaign aimed at legal change within a non-profit.
  • An ability to turn detailed policy/research documents into actionable briefs for political stakeholders.. You’ll have experience pinpointing compelling calls to action for politicians on complex issues
  • A willingness to make new connections and make bold asks. You’ll feel comfortable regularly working within parliament and not be afraid to approach MPs to ask them to submit a parliamentary question or host a roundtable.

This is an opportunity to join HOPE not hate at an exciting time as we expand our work in quantitative research.

HOPE not hate is looking for a Social Media Researcher to join our research team. 

You will work on a new project looking at the role of social media in the spread of far-right hate online, using quantitative methods. The job will require mapping networks, identifying key actors and analysing trends and narratives within the far right across a wide range of platforms. 

The role will work alongside our researchers who have a deep understanding of the far right in the UK and you will add network analysis, topic modelling and other data analysis methods, as well as visualisation techniques.

You will also work alongside other teams within HOPE not hate to produce research that can be used to campaign for change and influence and inform stakeholders within government, technology and civil society.

The role is the first one of its kind in the organisation, and will suit someone who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team and has the ability and willingness to explore new techniques and find solutions to complex problems. You will have the opportunity to collaborate across the team to make our research more impactful and explore new ways of applying your skill to disrupt the far right.

The team you will be joining aims to expose and undermine the far right while also working to better understand the drivers of prejudice. We publish numerous reports and articles per year on far-right activism and ideology based on both open and closed source information. Our team’s output helps inform HOPE not hate’s community engagement by providing expertise to local communities, and helps guide our work in schools where we teach young people to recognise and challenge prejudice and hate

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING IN THIS ROLE

  • Working as a social media researcher focused on analysing the spread of far-right narratives on social media platforms, using network analysis and other methods.
  • Giving input and contributing to other research projects within the team and across the organisation.
  • Finding ways to apply your skill set to create more impactful research.
  • Contributing and developing our monitoring of far-right narratives online using social media data and OSINT methods.
  • Working with our Parliamentary Officer, you will ensure the organisations groundbreaking research into online hate is seen by stakeholders within government, technology and civil society.

WHAT WE THINK YOU’LL NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO THE JOB

  • Experience in the field of social media, network or data analysis or related fields.
  • Have broad technical knowledge. The role requires someone who is comfortable with common database management systems, at least intermediate knowledge of Python and experience of using modern data visualisation techniques.
  • A pragmatic attitude. Your role is new to the organisation and you have broad enough knowledge to be able to work relatively independently.
  • A passion for HOPE not hate’s cause and interest in opposing the far right.
