I’ve been watching footage of the rioting that has been taking place in Belfast over the past few nights and it makes for worrying viewing.
One name that crops up time and time again is Jim Dowson, the former BNP fundraiser, religious zealot and now leader of the tiny far right group Britain First. Dowson appears keen to pour the proverbial fuel on the Belfast fires, attempting to stir up trouble behind the ongoing flag protests.
This is classic Dowson methodology who believes that the flurry of publicity can only be good fortune for his political party and more importantly for his bank balance.
So I have to wonder what Dowson makes of the behaviour of one of his right hand men, the Scottish organiser Gary Raikes?
Raikes has announced his retirement from politics until we uncover a new Oswald Mosley. His recent obsession with the founder of the British Union of Fascists has caused alarm with his some of his friends in recent months, with some questioning the formers Scottish BNP leader’s mental health.
Quite what the staunch Ulster Loyalist Dowson makes of it is uncertain, he is unlikely to be amused especially as Mosley made no secret of his support for Irish nationalism and his admiration for the IRA and in particular the Irish republican leader Michael Collins. In 1970 Mosley said ‘ The division of Ireland is wrong . It should end as soon as possible.
Raikes and his Mosley love affair could be bad for business for Jim Dowson.
