Meet Steven Lewis, Reform’s candidate for Normanton ward on Wakefield Borough Council.

In his official candidate statement, Lewis stated that he is concerned with “cracking down on illegal migration, supporting local businesses, supporting local communities, tackling the cost of living crises”, all of which is standard Reform messaging.
Yet his personal Facebook profile, reveals a man with more eclectic views, many of which might not land well with Reform UK’s target voters.

Take, for example, his one-man campaign against the celebration of Christmas, Easter and New Year’s Eve, all of which he appears to believe are “demonic” and/or pagan:
“Christmas pagan holiday to worship the sun god Saturnalia. Santa spells Satan.”
“THE BIBLE TEACHES PASSOVER NOT EASTER THAT MAKES YOU ALL SINNERS IN THE EYES OF GOD”
“Everyone out celebrating your demonic holiday yeah when the real New Year is 1st April”
Repeatedly referring to himself as the “Lion of Judah”, Lewis appears to hold the belief that he is himself an angel of God, and has been given power to distribute divine retribution against his enemies.
“I will bring holy fire down on anyone who gets in my way […] I AM AN ANGEL OF THE MOST HIGH AND HE SPEAKS THROUGH ME LET GLORY BE TO GOD AND THE HOLY SPIRIT AMEN”

It is not entirely clear why Lewis put himself forward for the election in May; he has previously stated that the divine rapture and tribulation will occur in April, an event of such cosmic significance that the local elections would be likely be cancelled.

Lewis is not the first embarrassment for Reform in Wakefield. HOPE not hate revealed in early April that another prospective candidate, Arnold Tabor, had expressed admiration for Oswald Mosley and wanted the UK to keep migrants in slave labour camps and hoped to “crush birthrates” in Africa.
Reform UK dropped Tabor as a candidate before nominations went in, but apparently did not decide to take a closer look at the rest of their candidates.
Perhaps they were hoping for an April apocalypse too?
