Two BNP councillors will stand trial in December accused of a racially-aggravated public order offence.

Dawn Charlton, 49, of Ewanrigg Road, Maryport, and Clive Jefferson, 46, of Slatefell Drive, Cockermouth, are accused of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress by displaying writing, a sign or visible representation which was threatening, abusive or insulting.

The pair deny the charge, which relates to leaflets distributed in Maryport in the run-up to the county council elections in May.

Charlton, a Broughton Moor parish councillor, and Jefferson, who is on Broughton Parish Council, both stood for election in the town.

They are due to face trial from December 3.

BNP leader Nick Griffin and Labour councillors are among the witnesses due to give evidence.

Charlton and Jefferson were released on unconditional bail.
