Weekend of Action – February

11 03 19

On the 24/25 February, volunteers from 23 different towns across the UK came out to run targeted leafleting sessions.

It was chilly, but the sun was shining, and over the Saturday and Sunday more than 15,000 leaflets were put through doors.

I had the chance to do a bit of a tour, meeting some old time HNH volunteers, as well as people who were leafleting for the first time. On Friday I joined Katie in Wrexham, who had organised a huge volunteer campaign during the Welsh Assembly Elections in 2016, running community voter registration and hustings, and getting over 20,000 leaflets and community newsletters through doors. After taking time out, she has pulled together a brilliant crew in Wrexham.

On the Saturday I joined Andrea in Oldham. This was the first time she had leafleted for HNH, and she had done a great job in pulling some other volunteers together. By lunchtime we had covered more than 5 miles, thousands of leaflets had been delivered, and we fully deserved a solid tea break.

Feedback coming in from other sessions around the country was very positive. There’s nothing more energising than getting out in the community, speaking to people, and knowing that every leaflet you put through a door is reaching someone new.

“The kids who joined us were fab as were the mums. We hadn’t met them before. We got a lot done, and will be heading back out in the week to finish the job off” – Sheila, Caerphilly.

This was our first weekend of action as part of a new project of engagement. We find ourselves in a strange position today. Electorally, the far-right are disorganised, with activism increasingly taking place online. At the same time, the far-right remain active in many communities, and as Brexit begins to bite – with the North East and West Midlands set to be hit particularly hard – the possibility of a new electoral threat emerging is real.

We are recruiting and training volunteers in a number of areas across the country where our work is needed most. This is a positive project, and our first weekend encapsulated this.

We’re already looking forward to the next weekend in March.
