It Could Happen Here

STATE OF HATE 2026

WELCOME TO OUR State of HATE 2026 report – the most comprehensive and analytical guide to the far right in Britain today.

This year’s report carries a stark warning. The far right is more extreme, bigger and bolder than ever before. Reform UK’s rise, growing street protests, and increasingly hardline rhetoric are reshaping the political landscape, while public opinion is shifting and polarisation deepens.

This report defines the challenge and sets out the scale of the crisis, but it also makes clear that a path to far-right power is not inevitable. Understanding the threat is the first step in stopping it.

INSIGHTS

  • The far right is bigger, bolder and more extreme than ever before: Since the 2024 general election, the far-right landscape has grown larger, louder and more confrontational, with Reform UK tipped to make major gains in 2026. Our polling shows Reform UK members hold far more extreme and racially exclusionary views than the wider public, as pressure from figures like Tommy Robinson and Rupert Lowe pushes politics further right.
  • Public opinion is shifting in response: As the far right grows more confident and visible, public opinion is shifting and British society is becoming more polarised. Support for Unite the Kingdom and the 251 anti-migrant protests tracked in 2025 show how local anger and genuine concerns are being used to grow far-right support.
  • The rise in ethno-nationalism: Ethnic definitions of who belongs have moved beyond the traditional far right and into mainstream political debate. Ideas like “remigration” dress up older calls for forced removal in softer language, while even civic nationalist movements often treat belonging as something that can be taken away.
  • Billionaires and bad actors are meddling in our politics: From rally appearances to online amplification, billionaire actors are playing an increasing role in UK politics while resisting online safety rules. Financial backing, weak moderation and foreign interference pose a real risk to the health of our democracy.
  • Protests and fascist groups: Beyond Reform UK, fascist groups and militant activists remain small but increasingly organised and visible, from Patriotic Alternative to decentralised extremist networks preparing for violence. Though electorally marginal, they still shape debate and last year 19 individuals were brought to justice for far-right terror offences.
  • It could happen here, but it isn’t inevitable: The groups covered in this report are extreme and growing in confidence, feeding off pessimism and division. The far right now poses its most significant threat in Britain for decades, perhaps ever, with the threat at the ballot box, on the streets and in our communities. But through local organising, community resilience and action we can protect our democracy.
